HOME OF WINTER TYRES

The first winter tyres were made in 1968. During the first years the demand was not that big. In 1974 the plant in Lieksa enabled the production of studded tyres. This made winter cycling possible, even outside the Finnish borders. 80 percent of Suomi Tyres winter tyres are exported.

For a long time Suomi Tyres have been an award winning producer of winter tyres. We are the only manufacturer on the northern hemisphere and therefore we have an exceptional expertise in wintery conditions and in addition to that we possess the skill to a unique manufacturing technique, eco-friendly rubber compounds and a superb skill regarding spikes.

A BIT MORE EXPENSIVE TYRES BUT THEY DO WORK AND THEY DO LAST

Suomen Rengastehdas is the only manufacturer of bicycle tyres in the northern countries. We produce eco-friendly bicycle tyres of high quality for all kind of conditions. The tyres are designed and tested in arctic conditions. Our goal is safety, durability and comfort. Our assortment consists of puncture protected and reflex equipped tyres.

The first bicycle tyres were made at the plant in Nokia in 1925. In 1974 the manufacturing process moved to Lieksa in northern Karelia. All our tyres are made at the plant in Lieksa.

ORIGINAL MOUNTAIN BIKE TYRES

The mountain bike was accidentally a hit when a bunch of young guys living in San Francisco came across the joy of riding a motorbike down the 748 meter high Mount Tamalpais.

The practitioners of this new activity, with Gary Fisher in charge, wanted to create tyres suitable for mountain biking. The problem was the lack of suitable tyres. Eventually the practitioners heard of a northern country called Finland where the small Rengastehdas produced thick low pressure tyres. Fisher and his friends paid a visit to our plant and bought tyres. After this the first mountain bikes that were made in an industrial scale were produced.

NON-TOXIC, ECO FRIENDLY TYRES

Our tyres are made of pure rubber compounds. Noxious oils have been replaced with aromatic oils.

The reason to why Suomi Tyres is a pioneer in eco-friendly tyre production is the thorough and ongoing product development. Since 2005 only ecofriendly rubber compounds are used in the production. We were the first company to introduce ecofriendly low-aromatic LA-oils in bicycle tyres.

What are these LA-oils?

In the 1950´s high-aromatic oils, that are a side product of oil refinery, were used in the tyre production. The reason to why they were used was that it made the rubber surface softer and easier to modify and refine.

The HA-oils affects the qualities in the tyres; durability, traction and friction. However they have a harmful impact on the environment because of the noxious levels of PAH-compounds and therefore they are carcinogenic.

LA (low aromatic)oils can replace high aromatic oils. The rubber compounds are clearly more expensive but the PAH-compounds drops remarkably. As shown in tests the harmful compounds are so low that the oil is no longer carcinogenic.

The rubber compounds represents a big part of the productions cost. That is the reason to why our tyres are more expensive but we think that it is important to use clean and eco-friendly rubber compounds.
